Overall Rating June 2, 2010
I recommend the race, and the downtown Austin course is very nice, but the organization leaves much to be desired. Here are a few issues: The website was never adequate. Up to race day, dead links remained for "spectator guide and parking", and at the expo, nobody I could find had any information on these issues. Registration for the active duty military category was confusing, and not available on line. The swim course was measured incorrectly - it was 1800-1850 meters! We found this out the day after the race! Paying to park ($7) at packet pick-up/expo always bothers me. Name/hometown/t-shirt size were totally messed up at packet pick up (seemed to be the case for nearly every participant). The 4 loop bike course became very crowded with a mix of Oly & sprint racers, making a fast ride kind of difficult. On the plus side: Austin is a fantastic city for triathlon (despite the HEAT!) This is a big event, with plenty of top notch competition. The action continues for a long time, with the sprint & "first time" races going off after the Oly, so there's nonstop action for spectators. The several bridges over the swim course make unique viewing perspectives for spectators. The start & waves seemed to go off right on time. Bottom line is that I'd do the race again, but I expect more from an event of this supposed caliber.
