The EI Tri is very well organized, but no aid stations (at least not when I did it in 2006 and 2007). The swim is in the ocean, often with moderate waves/choppiness and cool-cold water, but wetsuits are usually allowed in accordance with USAT rules. The bike and run are both almost completely flat, out-and-back routes up and down the barrier island. Good-great beach scenery, but not necessarily amazing. Usually a busload of Marines from Camp Lejeune come up to block roads off and help out, which adds an interesting aspect to the bike ride. There is a wide range of skill levels, along with a wide range of people, from local beach residents to those who come down from Virginia or the Raleigh-Durham area. The volunteers and the Emerald Isle Sports and Recreation people are very nice people.

This race is a great reason to visit Emerald Isle. The course is beachy and flat. Just be careful on the ride because roads can be a bit sandy which makes slipping on your bike easy!
