What a great race! The race organizers have the logistics down and clearly partner with the local community. The race got a late start because there was a car accident on the course that needed to be cleared – I took this as a great thing that the organizer and the local authorities were working so closely together. The community really comes out to support the athletes. A barbershop quartet along the run, 2 guys on djimbe drums, the local hockey team handing out ice/snow, these are just a few examples of why this race was so much fun. The swim is quite easy - a U from the shore in a clean lake. The wetsuit rippers upon leaving the water were great. The bike was difficult - there were good stretches of flat road, but the Monstah' was a hell of a hill and the hills between miles 45 and 50 took whatever legs you have left. There is a great downhill just after that, however, that leaves you with a smile before the last 5 or so miles. The run was very nicely shaded. It was a 2 loop course that took you along the lake side, very scenic. It had a couple of hills, one in particular, that were quite testing. I'm a mid pack age grouper and loved the fact that although there were World Class athletes competing it felt like a race that catered to me, as well. I ran the chute with my 5 year old and upon crossing the finish line Chrissie Wellington put the finishers medal around my son's neck and took the time to chat with him for a few seconds! I look forward to doing this race again.
