Always merge to oncoming traffic!

Talk about a disaster! This inebriated driver plows into a bike race in South America.  Believe it or not there were NO fatalities but the photographer caught one heck of a shot.

The rule of thumb here is always research the course before you race. This elevation chart show over 1k foot climbs in the last 5 miles of the race. OUCH!
